{"id":26545,"date":"2019-11-21T06:34:13","date_gmt":"2019-11-21T06:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/?p=26545"},"modified":"2019-11-21T06:34:13","modified_gmt":"2019-11-21T06:34:13","slug":"oxford-union-president-resign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.englishforward.com\/news\/oxford-union-president-resign\/","title":{"rendered":"Oxford Union chamber assault: McGrath resigns after 45k petitions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The president of the Oxford Union, Brendan McGrath, has resigned after a blind Ghanaian student was kicked out of a debate event in Oxford.<\/strong><br \/>\nHis resignation comes days after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/the-oxford-union-justice-for-azamati-oxfordunionexclusion?recruiter=7060358&amp;utm_source=share_petition&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_initial&amp;recruited_by_id=00574ba0-ec3d-012f-18df-4040b91ba155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a petition\u00a0<\/a>calling for his resignation was launched by the Oxford University Africa Society (OUAS). This petition was signed by over 45,000 people in a few days.<br \/>\n<strong>The only black member of the Oxford Union, Jeremy Bararia, amongst others (the union&#8217;s secretary, chief of staff, director of press and the director of operations, etc&#8230;) resigned in protest of the way Ebenezer Azamati was treated.<\/strong><br \/>\nBararia joined seven other Chamber Union officials in the demonstration for the resignation of the union president, who had accused the victim of violent misconduct before later dropping his complaint.<br \/>\nHe wrote in a letter to the union president, Brendan McGrath, that he could no longer remain in the union if he remains in office as the president, stating McGrath possesses a low sense of morality and has no respect for persons of color and Africans.<br \/>\n<strong>His resignation on Monday brought the total number of executives that resigned to eight since the issue began.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>McGrath issues an apology on Facebook<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Mr. McGrath also faced a vote of no confidence which quickly accumulated about 150 signatures, the required amount for a vote for impeachment.<\/strong><br \/>\nAs earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/azamati-feeling-unwelcome-in-britain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, Ebenezer Azamati, a Ph.D. student from Ghana, was manhandled and dragged out from the union debate by security guards. See the original video: https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=krdRUGdBylg<br \/>\nThe unpleasant incident, which was caught on video, provoked a protest calling for the Union president to resign over the \u201cinhumane and shameful\u201d treatment of the 25-year-old Ghanaian student.<br \/>\nA statement posted on the Oxford Union Facebook page by Brendan McGrath, on Tuesday, reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Fundamentally, it is the president\u2019s job to ensure that every member feels welcome at the Oxford Union. This is a goal I have manifestly failed to reach. For all of my shortcomings and all of my mistakes, I apologise profusely and unqualifiedly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Oxford Union<\/strong><strong> Stance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The union had since tendered its unreserved apology to Mr. Ebenezer Azamati, after, withdrawing the charge of violent misconduct against him and reinstating him as a member.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We share the widespread outrage regarding the unacceptable treatment of Ebenezer Azamati, a member of our University community, at the Oxford Union.
