{"id":22235,"date":"2019-09-20T16:34:41","date_gmt":"2019-09-20T16:34:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/?p=22235"},"modified":"2019-09-20T16:34:41","modified_gmt":"2019-09-20T16:34:41","slug":"russian-college-expulsion-phone-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.englishforward.com\/news\/russian-college-expulsion-phone-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Russian college: Expulsion over pink phone case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>According to a recent publication by the Moscow Times, a renowned Russian college has threatened one of its male students over the fact that the boy has a pink phone case.<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The university claims that the color of the phone accessory proves that the student is gay, which is not openly approved by higher education institutions in the country. <\/span><b>Not only that but the Ural State University of Economics (<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/en.usue.ru\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>USUE<\/b><\/a><b>) claims to have gone through the student\u2019s social media profiles and to have found substantial proof of their claims there.\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The student has been actively declining such accusations and saying he is straight. Unfortunately, he still might face expulsion if the university decides his sexuality is a problem for faculty and peers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russian colleges and social climate<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the world has gradually become to accept people with different sexuality, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/equality-teaching-will-be-part-of-the-program-at-parkfield-school-despite-parent-protests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">equality education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is becoming a requirement in western schools, Russian colleges, and society, have a long way to go.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Recently, the Russian government passed a propaganda ban law, which prohibits the spread and distribution of any information related to non-traditional sexual relationships.\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such legislature is exceptionally harmful to the mind and psyche of LGBTQ members of society. Generally, the majority of Russians are not welcoming towards LGBTQ people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pink phone case<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>What is even more frustrating is that the accusations for the student were solely based on the color of his phone case.\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This accusation means that youth in Russia is severely limited in terms of self-expression, not to mention the danger that LGBTQ students are in.<\/span><b> Education should not be hindered by the fact that a government is conservative, and especially not because of discrimination based on students\u2019 sexual preferences.\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hopefully, the political and social landscape in Russia will soon change, as the current situation challenges free access to education for a number of students.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to a recent publication by the Moscow Times, a renowned Russian college has threatened one of its male students over the fact that the boy has a pink phone case.
