{"id":21161,"date":"2019-09-10T16:03:09","date_gmt":"2019-09-10T16:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/?p=21161"},"modified":"2019-09-10T16:03:09","modified_gmt":"2019-09-10T16:03:09","slug":"research-on-stress-weaken-defenses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.englishforward.com\/news\/research-on-stress-weaken-defenses\/","title":{"rendered":"Research on stress says it can weaken defenses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>New research on stress by Doctor Mark Alkema, a professor of neuroscience, has revealed some of the long term effects of stress on our organism.<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The publication has shed light on the way \u201cfight or flight\u201d reactions impact the biological balance in our bodies.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>In collaboration with colleagues from the National University of South in Argentina, Dr. Alkema set out to test the increased release of stress hormones like adrenaline on a species known as <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caenorhabditis_elegans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>C. elegans<\/i><\/b><\/a><b><i>.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His findings revealed that increased exposure to stress hormones might lead to a weakening in the immune system, and the overall stability of the organism.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>According to Dr. Alekma, the heightened exposure to abrupt or constant stress factors drastically shortens the lifespan of <\/b><b><i>C. elegans. <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, the same might be true for people as well, as stress is proven to increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this new research on stress was performed on much simpler organisms than the human body, the findings reveal underlying connections between the type of stress endured and the reaction of the body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research on stress might help students<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Students are one of the most stressed out groups in our population. The immense pressure and anxiety they experience as a result of busy school schedules and pending exams often cause mental health issues.<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A worrying statistic revealed that more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/more-students-korea-suicidal-thoughts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thirty percent (30%) of students in South Korea had experienced suicidal thoughts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as a result of school-related anxiety.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The revelations put forward by Dr. Alkema&#8217;s new research on stress are another cause for worry, as this possibly means that not only the mental health of students might be in danger.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Schools and governments should make an effort to recognize the increasing amount of students with mental health problems caused by the intensity of their schoolwork.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Not only that, but educational institutions need to provide children with adequate care and support and help them get through such daunting periods.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New research on stress by Doctor Mark Alkema, a professor of neuroscience, has revealed some of the long term effects of stress on our organism.
