{"id":20725,"date":"2019-09-03T14:01:53","date_gmt":"2019-09-03T14:01:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/?p=20725"},"modified":"2019-09-03T14:01:53","modified_gmt":"2019-09-03T14:01:53","slug":"hungary-changes-in-education-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.englishforward.com\/news\/hungary-changes-in-education-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Hungary protests changes in education law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>A public demonstration took place at the Kossuth Square in Budapest, Hungary, on Saturday, as concerned citizens protested the recently announced changes to education law in the country.<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students in Hungary are also planning a national strike in September, in response to the recent law revisions.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b>The protests are nationwide, and even the opposition groups have expressed concerns about <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Viktor-Orban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/b><\/a><b>\u2019s educational policy amendments.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Five opposition party leaders have submitted claims at the Constitutional Court, as they find the amendments violate laws and the constitution of the country.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what were the recent changes in education law, that so many people decided to voice their dissatisfaction?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in education law<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The changes in education law introduced by a parliament accepted amendment are numerous, however, the most significant ones revolve around the government\u2019s authority to appoint heads of schools and give educational institutions a private status.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Overall, the changes in education law give the government a very authoritarian power over the way education in the country functions.<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some of the most debatable points of the education law revisions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government will decide whether a child is eligible to spend one more year in nursery school after turning six years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kindergarten will be compulsory for all children over three-years-old, except if a parent formally requests a delay by one year<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers will be able to start working without passing a language exam<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many teachers and union members have expressed their concerns, saying that it is unfortunate that parliament approved the changes, despite significant public objections.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Considering the authoritarian character of the changes in education law, it is no surprise that the masses are gathering to protest.<\/strong> <\/span>Governments play an essential role in the way education in any country is structured, and this is a very responsible position.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/student-protest-discrimination-in-papua\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against changes to education law are nothing new, however, what Hungary is currently witnessing is of significant magnitude.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A public demonstration took place at the Kossuth Square in Budapest, Hungary, on Saturday, as concerned citizens protested the recently announced changes to education law in the country.
