{"id":20246,"date":"2019-08-25T11:14:04","date_gmt":"2019-08-25T11:14:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/?p=20246"},"modified":"2019-08-25T11:14:04","modified_gmt":"2019-08-25T11:14:04","slug":"ebacc-expansion-or-termination-demanded","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.englishforward.com\/news\/ebacc-expansion-or-termination-demanded\/","title":{"rendered":"Ebacc expansion &#8211; or termination &#8211; demanded"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Many experts in the British arts industry have called for the expansion &#8211; or at worst, termination &#8211; of the English Baccalaureate (Ebacc) program as it has significantly<a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/creative-education-hoisted-by-uk-stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> decreased the number of qualified students<\/a> graduating from high school and entering tertiary education programs in the field.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><br \/>\nOne recalls<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2012\/11\/26\/neville-brody-dandad-education-ebacc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> British Graphic Designer, Typographer and Art Director\u00a0Neville Brody<\/a> expressing fears in a September 2012 interview that the Ebacc will discourage students from studying arts subjects, leading to the closure of some UK art schools and a decline of the creative industries. Well, that seems the trend going forward.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>They haven\u2019t included any creative subjects as part of the Ebacc, which is absolutely short-sighted insanity &#8211; Neville Brody<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The widely controversial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/english-baccalaureate-ebacc\/english-baccalaureate-ebacc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ebacc<\/a>\u00a0program is forcing students in the United Kingdom (UK) to choose between art subjects instead of giving them the opportunity to participate in multiple courses with arts focus.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ebacc limits children&#8217;s choices of a career path<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Creative artists look at Ebacc as \u201cone of the biggest mistakes in British government\u201d and agreed that the government is trying to &#8220;demolish and smash all ideas about creative education&#8221; as it wants to focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects.<\/strong><br \/>\nCreative subjects such as art and design will not count towards the EBacc qualifications, which instead are graded on performance in academic \u201cstem\u201d subjects. These stem subjects are English, mathematics, history or geography, the sciences, and a language.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ebacc has become controversial as it limits students&#8217; opportunities when it comes to education in the field of arts. Even some celebrities and influential members of the society in the United Kingdom have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/creative-education-hoisted-by-uk-stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spoken out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against the program.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nAccording to many, the Ebacc program is limiting children\u2019s ability to chose a developmental path they enjoy.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For example, while one student can sing, some of their classmates can both sing and draw.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>However, according to the Ebacc program, students can choose only a single subject with a focus on the arts. Thus, students are forced to choose between the type of art they like better, which, in turn, inhibits them from developing all their talents.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ebacc and arts education\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Arts subjects have been gradually fading away from school curriculums, as there is less and less financing dedicated to this sector.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Just recently, parents in Wales expressed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/wales-budget-cuts-parents-pay-for-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concerns <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that they have to pay additional tuition to send their children to music classes.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>While most private schools in the country have harnessed an interest in arts, public schools have become less inclined to pay attention to these classes.
