{"id":19728,"date":"2019-08-16T06:27:07","date_gmt":"2019-08-16T06:27:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/?p=19728"},"modified":"2019-08-16T06:27:07","modified_gmt":"2019-08-16T06:27:07","slug":"higher-ed-frowns-on-monitoring-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.englishforward.com\/news\/higher-ed-frowns-on-monitoring-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Higher Ed frowns on monitoring Chinese students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>According to recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/06\/28\/728659124\/fbi-urges-universities-to-monitor-some-chinese-students-and-scholars-in-the-u-s?utm_source=npr_newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=20190628&amp;utm_campaign=breakingnews&amp;utm_term=nprnews&amp;utm_id=38187204&amp;t=1565819823192\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>, the FBI has urged universities in the United States to monitor Chinese nationals enrolled in their programs and caused higher education organizations to express concerns.<\/strong><br \/>\nIn a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org\/fbi-universities-monitoring-chinese-students\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> published by PEN America, requests by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to monitor students from China are in breach of democratic principles and pose a threat to the freedom of expression and knowledge of students in universities.<br \/>\nPEN American\u00a0Center (now known as\u00a0PEN America), founded in 1922 and headquartered in New York City, is a nonprofit organization that works to defend and celebrate free expression in the United States and worldwide through the advancement of literature and human rights.<br \/>\n<b>Commenting on the issue, the President of the Association of American Colleges &amp; Universities, Lynn Pasquerella, claimed that requests to separate students by nationality are putting universities in a morally questionable situation.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyberattacks on higher ed institutions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The joint statement also points out that China is known for employing questionable surveillance tactics; however, US authorities should not turn to practices they do not condone.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b>There has been a wave of cyberattacks against US universities and schools in recent months.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> One of the hacks even managed to cause a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/malware-attack-classes-in-alabama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">delay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the beginning of the school year for all public schools in Alabama.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Cyberattacks are becoming a common occurrence among education institutions all over the world, as they can yield a large amount of personal information, which can later be used for statistical and intelligence research.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> However, US authorities are trying to legally obtain all this information by requesting it from universities, which is a concerning decision.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current political tensions between the United States and China have been a reason for concern for a lot of higher education institutions across the country. <\/span><b>According to statistics, more than thirty percent (30%) of all international students in the United States are Chinese.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to recent reports, the FBI has urged universities in the United States to monitor Chinese nationals enrolled in their programs and caused higher education organizations to express concerns.
