{"id":19655,"date":"2019-08-13T12:29:39","date_gmt":"2019-08-13T12:29:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/?p=19655"},"modified":"2019-08-13T12:29:39","modified_gmt":"2019-08-13T12:29:39","slug":"erasmus-students-threatened-by-brexit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.englishforward.com\/news\/erasmus-students-threatened-by-brexit\/","title":{"rendered":"Erasmus students in the United Kingdom threatened by Brexit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Government officials in Scotland and Wales are looking into ways to continue offering Erasmus positions to international students even in the event of a no-deal exit from the European Union.\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a letter to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/ministers\/secretary-of-state-for-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">United Kingdom Education Secretary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the two governments expressed their concerns that a hard exit might mean an end to the effective implementation of the Erasmus program.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b>According to recent statistics, more than fifteen thousand (15,000) Scottish Erasmus students and teachers have been active participants in the European exchange program. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While the United Kingdom is one of the most popular destinations for international students looking to study abroad, universities might face significant problems after Brexit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Erasmus students and Brexit<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unfortunately, a hard exit from the European Union might mean that Erasmus students will have to renegotiate their acceptance terms.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b>According to government representatives, without detailed third-country agreements, Brexit will have a severe effect on the success rate of the Erasmus program. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The adverse effects of a hard exit span beyond higher education as well. Recent research has shown that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/brexit-has-a-negative-effect-on-language-learning-across-the-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fewer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> students are interested in studying foreign languages, as a result of Brexit.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>The government representative for Scotland expressed concerns that the Department of Education (DoE) is looking into the possibility to create a program similar to Erasmus, which will be reserved for British citizens only.<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unfortunately, Brexit might deprive Erasmus students of the opportunity to pursue a higher education diploma at a British university.
