{"id":18792,"date":"2019-07-26T02:06:18","date_gmt":"2019-07-26T02:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/?p=18792"},"modified":"2019-07-26T02:06:18","modified_gmt":"2019-07-26T02:06:18","slug":"us-senator-ncaa-student-athletes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.englishforward.com\/news\/us-senator-ncaa-student-athletes\/","title":{"rendered":"US Senator said NCAA needs to compensate befitting student-athletes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>United States Senator Chris Murphy used a report which is released early 2019 titled \u201cMadness Inc: How Everyone is Getting Rich Off College Sports &#8211; Except the Players\u201d to draw out National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) about the right compensation for student-athletes.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The second file of report \u201cMadness Inc.\u201d was released on Monday by Murphy. <\/span><b>It pointed out how limiting the college athletics programs for its students because it keeps them on the field to play which causes the restriction to learn education.<\/b><br \/>\n<iframe title=\"Lawmaker Calls on NCAA to Better Compensate Student-Athletes\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qInvIdeTQSg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the video, Murphy highlighted:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTo me, this is a civil rights issue.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTo me, this is an issue of fairness.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He added that student-athletes didn\u2019t receive the right education that they suppose to get:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe NCAA\u2019s defense for why they don\u2019t compensate students while all of the adults are getting rich is that the scholarship is good enough compensation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With that said, Murphy can see the reason why behind it:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen you are spending much of your time traveling all over the country promoting the brand of your schools, doesn\u2019t leave much time left for schoolwork.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The issue was further discussed by the higher education officials and upholders. From a non-profit institution, National College Players Association (NCPA) president Ramogi Huma said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI played in three games before I even saw a classroom as a true freshman.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Huma personally experienced the daily grind that student-athletes go through. <\/span><b>He stated that reformation is necessary to stop disparaging learning and start to value the long term revenue.<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One solution that came up during the panel discussion was <\/span><b>to authorize athletes to play sport full-time while attending classes on the side.<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThat might mean scaling back some academics during the season, or extending the scholarships years after the eligibility is complete.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the panelists, Mary Willingham, said that student-athletes will have to endure and wait until the issue has been settled.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs long as we connect academic eligibility to athletic eligibility, there\u2019s going to be fraud.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The talk emphasized that it is the schools&#8217; duty and NCAA\u2019s priority to <\/span><b>make the full education applicable and accessible for student-athletes.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>United States Senator Chris Murphy used a report which is released early 2019 titled \u201cMadness Inc: How Everyone is Getting Rich Off College Sports &#8211; Except the Players\u201d to draw out National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) about the right compensation for student-athletes.
