{"id":18673,"date":"2019-07-21T19:37:34","date_gmt":"2019-07-21T19:37:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/?p=18673"},"modified":"2019-07-21T19:37:34","modified_gmt":"2019-07-21T19:37:34","slug":"smcc-decreases-students-housing-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.englishforward.com\/news\/smcc-decreases-students-housing-costs\/","title":{"rendered":"SMCC decreases students housing costs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><i>Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) declared this July that housing fees will decrease for the students after analyzing incurred damages in residential properties.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tiffanie Bentley, Student Life\u2019s Dean, confirms this by lowering it <\/span><b>from two hundred fifty United States dollar ($250) to one hundred ($100).<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe found that most students don\u2019t incur any damages.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFor those who do, the damage is usually under $100.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She said that by lowering fees, the students will have more options in applying for housing.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOne of our goals is and always has been to make access to the college as barrier-free as possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The public community college operates as a two-year institution. The allotted full tuition for Maine locals is about two thousand eight hundred United States dollars ($2,800) as Bentley has said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBecause of our low tuition, we enroll a disproportionate number of students who face challenges affecting the greater Portland area, such as housing and food insecurity.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Phil Saucier, the Residents Life, and Student Involvement Director, said that when students have difficulties looking for a place to stay, <\/span><b>\u201cit\u2019s hard to focus on learning.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf students have access to housing, then they have security, as well as access to resources such as their residential assistant.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A study conducted by Complete College America has revealed that <\/span><b>students who complete thirty (30) credits per year are more likely to finish with credentials than with students who have fewer credits.<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, according to Bentley, students<\/span><b> \u201cwho work on top of taking classes, taking 15 credits a semester may not be realistic.\u201d<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SMCC is currently considering to offer free housing for students who are taking at least six (6) credits during the summer term.
