{"id":18250,"date":"2019-07-06T16:37:41","date_gmt":"2019-07-06T16:37:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/?p=18250"},"modified":"2019-07-06T16:37:41","modified_gmt":"2019-07-06T16:37:41","slug":"degrees-first-female-students-in-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.englishforward.com\/news\/degrees-first-female-students-in-the-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"Degrees finally awarded to the first female medical students in the UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The University of Edinburgh <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/news\/2019\/uk-s-first-female-students-finally-awarded-degrees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has finally<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> awarded<strong> the first ever female medical students their much-deserved degrees.<\/strong> This happens more than one hundred and fifty years after the group of seven revolutionaries attended the institution.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The group of seven women, also known as <strong>the \u201cEdinburgh Seven&#8221;, first started attending the university back in 1869.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The posthumous graduation ceremony for these pioneer women comes at a time when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/equality-teaching-will-be-part-of-the-program-at-parkfield-school-despite-parent-protests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">equality<\/a> is a touchy subject for British education. Despite that, modern-day Britain has gone a long way since the nineteenth century. Societal progress and development over the years have allowed <strong>the group to be awarded their deserved diplomas, a century and a half later.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A doctors degree in 1869<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The struggle of these women was great, as, during the nineteenth century, women were not a common sight in the field of medicine. Even if they completed their courses with excellence, no worse than any of their male colleagues, <strong>the seven did not receive their diplomas or their doctoral degrees when they had to.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The course of their education was not natural either. One time during their university education, <strong>when they had to attend an exam in human anatomy, a riot broke out in front of Surgeon\u2019s Hall at the University of Edinburgh,<\/strong> as other students and teachers did not want the seven to be allowed to sit the exam.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To commemorate this struggle, and to honor the efforts of these seven outstanding revolutionaries, <strong>the University of Edinburgh will not only award them their medical degrees but organize a series of events highlighting the women\u2019s achievements.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Edinburgh has finally awarded the first ever female medical students their much-deserved degrees.
