You will meet it in older books, but it sounds odd in everyday speech and writing today.

Written by Mitch Rankin, CEO and owner of EnglishForward.com since 2018. Last reviewed 10 October 2026.

Why you need “do”

When have to means “must” (an obligation), modern English treats have like an ordinary verb. Ordinary verbs make questions with do, does or did.

Pattern: Do / Does / Did + subject + have to + base verb?

Do I have to submit this report today?

Does she have to attend the meeting?

Did they have to pay extra for shipping?

After does or did, the word is always have, not has or had. Say “Does she have to go?”, not “Does she has to go?”

Statement

Question

Negative

I have to leave.

Do I have to leave?

I don’t have to leave.

She has to attend.

Does she have to attend?

She doesn’t have to attend.

They had to pay.

Did they have to pay?

They didn’t have to pay.

What about “Have I to”?

Older English let have jump in front of the subject to make a question, the same way be does in “Am I late?” So “Have I to go?” was once ordinary English. Modern English no longer does this with have to, so these sound outdated:

Have I to finish this work now? (modern: Do I have to finish this work now?)

Has she to report to HR? (modern: Does she have to report to HR?)

You may still see this form in older writing. In an exam, email or conversation, use do.

Other ways to ask about obligation

Expression

Feel

Example

Do I have to…?

Standard, everyday

Do I have to bring my passport?

Have I got to…?

Informal, most common in British English

Have I got to do this right now?

Must I…?

Formal, a little strong

Must I present the documents in person?

Am I required to…?

Formal, official

Am I required to submit a paper copy?

Is it necessary to…?

Polite, neutral

Is it necessary to reserve a seat?

Have I to…?

Old-fashioned

Have I to stay here? (avoid)

Tone matters too. “Do I have to…?” can sound reluctant, as if you would rather not. If you are asking an official for information, “Am I required to…?” or “Is it necessary to…?” sounds more neutral.

Don’t have to is not the same as mustn’t

You don’t have to wear a tie. (It is optional.)

You mustn’t enter the lab. (It is forbidden.)

Learners often mix these up because their own language may use one word for both ideas.

Quick practice

Correct each sentence. Answers are below.

Have I to wear a uniform?

Does she has to work tomorrow?

Did you had to wait long?

The museum is free, so we mustn’t pay to go in.

Answers: 1. Do I have to wear a uniform? 2. Does she have to work tomorrow? 3. Did you have to wait long? 4. …so we don’t have to pay to go in.

Frequently asked questions

Is “Have I to” wrong? It was normal in older English. Today it sounds outdated, so most teachers and editors would change it to “Do I have to”.

Can I say “Have I got to”? Yes, in informal speech, especially in British English. In formal writing, prefer “Do I have to” or “Am I required to”.

Do I need “do” in the past tense? Yes. “Did I have to…?” is the standard past question.

Related guides

‘Years Old’ or ‘Years-Old’?
