One common discrepancy is evidenced in the American English version where certain words are spelled differently from the UK&#8217;s original version of the language.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of these words is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/words-at-play\/is-it-forty-or-fourty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> forty, or is it fourty<\/a>? A good number of people are not sure whether the number 40 is &#8216;fourty&#8217; or &#8216;forty&#8217;. The following spellings featured in middle English: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fowwerrtig, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feortig, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feowerti (and fowerti), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feouwerti,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feuwerti (and fuwerti), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fuerti, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feowrti,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fourte,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fourti, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vourti, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vourty, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forti, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fourty, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">faurty, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fourth and fourthy.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern English gave us the following options: fourtie, fourtye, fortie, forty, and vorty. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast forward to today and forty is the only one officially accepted as the spelling of the number 40.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40 is an important number used everywhere: from accounting, engineering and mathematics to entertainment and religions, just to mention a few.\u00a0 That said, the accepted spelling continues to change. And who knows, it might soon change to another spelling in a few years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Which is American English \u2018forty\u2019 or \u2018fourty\u2019<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word &#8216;fourty&#8217; is just a surprising misspelling of &#8216;forty&#8217;.\u00a0 The correct spelling used by all American authors is &#8216;forty&#8217;.
