They might seem intimidating at first but we use many of them already without thinking about it, like \u2019wake up\u2019, \u2019give up\u2019, \u2019turn on\/off\u2019, \u2019run away\u2019 and \u2019work out\u2019. So, let\u2019s dive into (start with enthusiasm) the most common ones!<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1. Break down<\/strong> = (of a vehicle\/machine) to stop working<br \/>\nMy car broke down so I had to take a taxi.<br \/>\n<strong>2. Bring up<\/strong> = to raise a child<br \/>\nShe was brought up in the countryside.<br \/>\n<strong>3. Bump into<\/strong> = to meet by chance<br \/>\nYou\u2019ll never guess who I bumped into this morning!<br \/>\n<strong>4. Call on<\/strong> = to visit<br \/>\nI\u2019ll call on you this afternoon after work.<br \/>\n<strong>5. Call off<\/strong> = to cancel<br \/>\nIf it rains tomorrow, we\u2019ll have to call the game off.<br \/>\n<strong>6. Come down with<\/strong> = to be ill<br \/>\nI hope he isn\u2019t coming down with the flu!<br \/>\n<strong>7. Cut it out<\/strong> = to stop doing something<br \/>\nHey, cut it out! I can\u2019t sleep with all that noise.<br \/>\n<strong>8. Drop by \/ in<\/strong> = to visit briefly<br \/>\nI\u2019ll just drop by later to tell you the news.<br \/>\n<strong>9. Drop off<\/strong> = to take someone somewhere (esp. by car)<br \/>\nWhen I drop off the kids at school I\u2019ll go shopping.<br \/>\n<strong>10. End up<\/strong> = to have a final result, often unexpected<br \/>\nI wanted to go to the park but ended up in a coffee shop instead.<br \/>\n<strong>11. Get along with<\/strong> = to be friendly<br \/>\nMy cats and dogs get along with each other surprisingly well.<br \/>\n<strong>12. Get back to<\/strong> = to return with the answer\/request later<br \/>\nI\u2019ll get back to you once I check that information.<br \/>\n<strong>13. Get over<\/strong> = to overcome<br \/>\nI know it\u2019s hard for him now but he\u2019ll get over it.<br \/>\n<strong>14. Hang out<\/strong> = to spend a lot of time in a particular place \/ with someone<br \/>\nHe likes to hang out with his playmates after school.<br \/>\n<strong>15. Hold on<\/strong> = to wait for a moment<br \/>\nHold on; I\u2019ll connect you with Mr. Johnson.<br \/>\n<strong>16. Look up<\/strong> = to find some information<br \/>\nI didn\u2019t know the word so I looked it up in the dictionary.<br \/>\n<strong>17. Look after<\/strong> = to take care of someone<br \/>\nI need to look after my sister\u2019s kids this afternoon.<br \/>\n<strong>18. Make up<\/strong> = to invent a story<br \/>\nI don\u2019t believe a word you\u2019re saying. You\u2019re just making it up.<br \/>\n<strong>19. Pick up<\/strong> = to answer the phone<br \/>\nI called him yesterday but he didn\u2019t pick up.<br \/>\n<strong>20. Put off<\/strong> = to postpone<br \/>\nWe\u2019ll have to put off that project for the time being.<br \/>\n<strong>21. Put up with<\/strong> = to tolerate<br \/>\nI won\u2019t put up with such behavior.<br \/>\n<strong>22. Run out of<\/strong> = to use it completely<br \/>\nIt seems we\u2019ve run out of milk.<br \/>\n<strong>23. Show up<\/strong> = to appear<br \/>\nWe waited for her for a while but she didn\u2019t show up.<br \/>\n<strong>24. Take off<\/strong> = to remove a piece of clothes<br \/>\nWhy don\u2019t you take off your jacket? It\u2019s warm in here.<br \/>\n<strong>25.
