More so, it is a type of style where the letters are slanted upward to the right.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The English language dictionary describes italics as letters that lean to the right.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How to italicize<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Italicized words are usually achieved by writing letters slanting upwards to the right. To<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">italicize a word when typing, select and highlight the text first. Then, hold down the control key on the keyboard and then press the<\/span><b> I<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the keyboard.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What does it mean when a word is italicized?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To italicize is to write words in italics. Italics in text are for calling attention to certain words in a sentence. Other reasons for using italicized words are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To provide emphasis<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. A word can be written in italics in a sentence to emphasize it.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Example:<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The robbers stole <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ten <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cars.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here,<\/span><b> ten<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is italicized to emphasize the number of cars stolen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. To show contrast<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a word italicized can show contrast between two words or phrases,. You might want to italicize that phrase so that your readers don\u2019t miss it.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Example:<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I managed to italicize not ten but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">twenty<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> words.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using italics to provide emphasis or show contrast is only accepted in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/blog\/tips-to-improve-your-writing-in-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">informal writing<\/a>. Most style guidelines advise against italicizing, especially in formal, professional or academic writing. In most cases, it\u2019s preferable to use syntax ( arrangement of phrases to create<a href=\"http:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/blog\/simple-compound-complex-sentences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> well-formed sentences<\/a> in a language) to emphasize your point in these scenarios.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. For titles of works<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Italics are also commonly used to write titles of songs, plays, movies,\u00a0 newspapers, magazines and albums. Italicizing book titles is also a common use. Book titles italics will let you know the name of the book, right away, after reading the sentence.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Examples:<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I read an interesting article in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times today<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romeo and Juliet <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is one of Shakespeare&#8217;s best reads.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of my favorite albums is the beetle&#8217;s album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revolver.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. For non-English words<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When writing a non- English word in an English sentence, we use italics to denote the word or words.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Example:\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Latin word <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/study.com\/academy\/lesson\/binomial-nomenclature-definition-classification-system.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">binomial nomenclature <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is used in Biology language.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. For biological names<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biological names such as species and genus names are always italicized.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Example<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homo sapiens <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">belong to the human species<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also note that in writing biological words, the first word is capitalized but the second one is not.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. With names of cars, boats and other man-made\u00a0 vessels<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We italicize man-made vessels put in a sentence. However, if it is a brand name such as Ford or Corvette, do not italicize.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Examples<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titanic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sank a long time ago.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We boarded the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boeing <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when we were traveling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. In place of quotation marks<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content that was meant to be in quotation marks can be italicized instead and still maintain the same meaning<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Example<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The word &#8220;italics&#8221; comes from a Greek word meaning &#8220;Italy&#8221;.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You would also consider having it as<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">italics <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comes from a Greek word meaning <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Italy.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. English dictionary examples<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples are in italics to after defining a word. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The examples of how to use the defined word in a sentence are italicized.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. References in the Chicago and MLA style<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We italicize the references of written content on the last page of articles.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. To denote legal cases<\/span><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When naming a legal case in a paper, italicize the case title. You should also italicize the legal case name on your works cited page or bibliography.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Example:<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The famous case of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gideon v. Wainwright<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a landmark in American legal history.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Are anime titles italicized?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We italicize anime titles if they refer to the name of an anime movie or book. The dictionary will also italicize anime titles when they mention them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>There are some rules to be followed when using italics in\u00a0 English<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.Try not to use italics for too many different reasons in a single document.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, if the document has a lot of titles and foreign words, you may want to find a different way of creating <a href=\"http:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/blog\/parentheses-singular-definition-and-uses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emphasis<\/a>.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. If you italicize a word or any part of a document, do it consistently.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you\u2019re using italics for loan words in one part of an essay, every other loan word would have to be italicized.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. There are certain titles of things that all style guides agree we should not italicize, if ever used in a sentence.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Examples:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Award titles (Best Actress)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commercial products (Coca-cola)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public documents (Bill of Rights)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legal documents (Child custody)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Names of artifacts (Mona Lisa Painting)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Names of buildings (Twin Towers)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Political documents (Declaration of Independence)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scriptures of major religions (the Bible, the Quran)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Software (Mozilla Firefox)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditional games(checkers)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Don\u2019t italicize or capitalize the word \u201cthe\u201d at the beginning of titles.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if \u201cthe\u201d is part of the official name, such as \u201cThe Times Magazine<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d most style guides recommend that you do not capitalize or italicize \u201cthe\u201d when it comes at the beginning of a title.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you read today&#8217;s copy of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times Magazine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What are Italics?
