It is presented by use of quotation marks. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two type<\/span>s<b>: Single quotation marks <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>double quotation marks<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Single quotation marks vs double quotation marks<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>How to quote a quote<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British English puts to use single quotation marks while American English uses double quotation marks<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the American English style is commonly used than the British English style.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, we can also <a href=\"https:\/\/libanswers.cmich.edu\/faq\/25590\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">differentiate the double and single quotation marks<\/a> in other multiple ways. For instance, some writers use single quotation marks for thoughts and double quotation marks for speeches.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How to quote a quote within a quote<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. For a quote within a quote, there are certain rules we follow when using British English and the American English quotes:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you begin the quote with single quotation marks, then for the quote within a quote you will use double quotation marks.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, if you begin with double quotation marks, use single quotes for the quote within a quote.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beginning with single quotation marks<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Who called\u00a0 the girl a &#8220;liar&#8221;?&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beginning with double quotation marks<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;When I say &#8216;maybe,&#8217;\u00a0 I mean I will think about it,&#8221; said my mother.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. For a block quote, quotation within the block will have double or single quotes, depending on the language being used (British English or American English).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are different types of quotes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Direct quotes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indirect quotes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In-text quotes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>What is a direct quote?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/blog\/how-to-write-an-ap-english-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">direct quote<\/a> involves the repetition of the exact word to word said by another person. A direct quote uses double quotation marks.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are rules we should follow when writing direct quotes:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. If you start the sentence by mentioning who said it, use a comma after the speaker, then the first quotation mark.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carol said, &#8220;I am ready for the baby&#8221;.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. If you start with the quoted words followed by the person who said these words, use a comma at the end of the sentence, then the quotation mark.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had no idea class had started,\u201d said Michael.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. In direct quotes, if a sentence has a punctuation mark, it should be inside the quotation marks. If there is an exclamation point or a question mark, do not add a comma after either of the punctuation marks.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is wonderful!\u201d they exclaimed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She asked her daughter slowly, \u201cDid you eat the muffin?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. When writing a conversation, every time a new speaker is talking, start a new paragraph.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow are you?&#8221; I said as I walked into the room<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFine how are you?\u201d replied my mother.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is so quiet in here,\u201d I said<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, I am home alone,\u201d she answered.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Indirect Quotations<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An indirect quotation refers to when you\u2019re reporting what someone said without using their exact words -paraphrasing. There is no need to put quotation marks in indirect quotations. A paraphrase preserves information from a source without using the exact wording.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0I looked at my child and said, &#8220;No, you can&#8217;t go swimming in the cold.&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I looked at my child and told him he could not go swimming in the cold.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What is a block quote?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It refers to a direct quotation in which the words quoted exceed a specific length. The length of every single quote varies depending on the writing style:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In APA style, a block quote exceeds 40 words<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In MLA style, a block quote exceeds 4 lines.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Chicago Manual style, the quoted material exceeds 5 lines.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We format block quotations differently using\u00a0 the following ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They start on their own line.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire block quotation is moved to the right 0.5 inches &#8211; the same as for a new paragraph &#8211; and is double spaced.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are not surrounded by any quotation marks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The punctuation at the end goes before the citation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ending citation is on the last line of the block quotation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The text after the block quotation begins on its own line, with paragraph spacing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The quote needs an introduction.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A computer expert explained by saying that Macs are often the best option for users who wish to work with video or picture manipulation. Macs are also very user friendly, which may benefit consumers who are new to computers. PCs, however, run Microsoft Office Suite the best. Therefore, students might find that a PC is their best option because it can run Microsoft Word and PowerPoint the smoothest. (Osler, 2010, p. 48)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to introduce a quote<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Use a single complete sentence followed by a colon.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A number of writers have pointed out that graduate school is a unique experience: \u201cGraduate school is unlike previous schooling in many ways.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Begin a sentence with your own words, then complete it with quoted words.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The phrase \u201ca quote within a quote\u201d is used in grammar.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. When quoting a researcher, use an introductory phrase to name the source, then follow with a comma.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first letter after the quotation marks should be upper case.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Dan&#8217;s words, &#8221; Education is now the pathway to success.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. You can also use a reporting verb, followed by a comma.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using &#8216;says&#8217; should be avoided unless the words were originally spoken aloud, for instance, during an interview.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karen states, &#8220;. . .<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anne remarks, &#8221; . . . .<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. With a &#8216;that&#8217; clause such as &#8216;in that&#8217;, we do not add a comma after the clause.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first letter of the quotation should be in lower case.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malcolm points out that &#8220;millions of students would fight for abroad scholarships.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>In-text quotes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In-text quotes point readers to the source that a writer is using in their own essay. They are placed inside paragraphs hence the name \u201cin-text.\u201d They are also called parenthetical citations because information identifying the source will be placed inside parentheses ( ).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to cite a quote<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citation refers to quoting from a book, paper or author.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We often use a citation when we quote a book.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>In MLA<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When quoting books in <a href=\"https:\/\/columbiacollege-ca.libguides.com\/mla\/in-text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MLA format<\/a>, we follow the author-page method of in-text citation.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The author&#8217;s last name and the page number from which the quotation or paraphrase is taken must appear in the text, and a complete reference should appear.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rule #1: When quoting books in MLA, the page number should always appear in the brackets, not in the sentence.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example: Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a &#8220;spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings&#8221; (263).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rule #2: If the author is unknown, a shortened title of the work is incorporated instead of an author&#8217;s name.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example: These regions have &#8220;more readily accessible climatic data and more comprehensive programs to monitor and study environmental change . . .&#8221; (&#8220;Impact of Global Warming&#8221;).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rule #3: If two or more authors have the same last name, provide both authors&#8217; first initials (or even the authors&#8217; full name if different authors share initials) in your citation.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example: (R. Miller 12), (A. Miller 46).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rule #4: For a source with two authors, list the authors\u2019 last names in the text \/quote or in the parenthetical citation.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example: The authors claim that surface reading looks at what is \u201cevident, perceptible, apprehensible in texts\u201d (Best and Marcus 9).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rule #5: For more than one work by an author, include a shortened title for the particular work. Put short titles of articles in quotation marks. (British English)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example: The authors state, \u201cciting quotes can be annoying.\u201d (Hu, Koller, and Shier 45).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rule #6: Citing the Bible<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make clear which Bible you&#8217;re using (and underline or italicize the title), as each version varies, followed by book (not italicized or underlined), chapter, and verse.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example: Ezekiel saw &#8220;what seemed to be four living creatures,&#8221; each with faces of a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Jerusalem Bible<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ezek. 1.5-10).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rule #7: For quotations within a website, use the following guidelines:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Include in the text the first item that appears in the Work Cited entry that corresponds to the citation (e.g. author name, article name, website name, film name).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not add paragraph or page numbers based on your browser\u2019s print preview function.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unless you must list the website&#8217;s name in the signal phrase, do not include URLs in-text. Only provide partial URLs such as when the name of the site includes, for example, a domain name, like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNN.com<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 as opposed to writing out http:\/\/www.cnn.com.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>In APA<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When quoting a book or in an essay, <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.uq.edu.au\/referencing\/apa6\/direct-quotations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">APA format<\/a> follows the author-date method of in-text citation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Marx, 1998).<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When making reference to an entire book or article, you only have to make reference to the author and year of publication and not the page number.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When directly quoting another work,\u00a0 include the page number at the end of the citation in parentheses. Add \u201cp.\u201d (for one page) or \u201cpp.\u201d (for multiple pages).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example: (Marx, 1998, p. 199) or (Marx, 1998, pp. 199\u2013201).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wondering how to quote a quote?
